Deres is a verdant semi mountainous settlement of Platanias with many water springs. It is located 30 km from the center of Chania, very close to the village Limni.
The Metochi that you will be able to see at Deres is an impressive fortress and a complex of buildings of the Venetian period that still survives. It has large internal courtyard and buildings all around and it was the residence of the Venetian ruler and later, the residence of the Turkish Aga who ruled the region during the Ottoman occupation.
If you visit Deres, you should definitely experience the traditional festivals and celebrations that are organized four times a year from early July to early September. You will have the opportunity to enjoy the Cretan hospitality and taste local treats, namely honey, cheese, wine, xerotigana and the famous raki, the traditional Cretan drink.
The permanent residents of the village cultivate olives, chestnuts as well as honey and they also produce charcoal in the traditional way. Last but not least, there is also an equestrian club, offering visitors the chance to learn how to ride a horse or to simply take a walk on horseback.

How to get to Deres Chania

After arriving in the city of Chania, follow the road west towards Platanias until you reach Maleme.
From the center of Tavronitis, as you come from Maleme, turn left and follow the provincial road that leads south to Voukolies. After about 2 km the road branches left again and leads to a group of small but beautiful villages of the Municipality of Platanias. They are Sirili, Zounaki and Limni - very picturesque villages, drowned in greenery, with amazing routes for nature lovers, ideal spots for relaxation and tranquility.
You follow the provincial road that leads to the heart of the hinterland, through a stunning green route buried in orchards, olive trees, walnut trees, plane trees and you reach the village of Deres. It is literally an oasis of the hinterland of the Municipality which, due to its natural beauty and idyllic location, attracts many visitors especially on May Day, the celebration of Nature.
Approximately 2 km before the entrance to the village there is a junction that leads to the private equestrian club of the area where, in addition to horseback riding, the visitor can enjoy delicious food and relax in the magic of the Cretan hinterland.
A very impressive sight and a place worth visiting is the church of Agia Kyriaki, which is literally hooked into the rock, among the cypress trees on the left side of the entrance to the village.
